Montserrat, West Indies
- The tourism package, "Voyage to the Volcano," created and offered by
Montserrat's Green Monkey Dive Shop and Tradewinds Real Estate has been
selected by National Geographic Adventure Magazine as one of their "Top
Twenty-five Best New Adventure Travel Trips of 2010." The
Magazine, published by the National Geographic Society, will feature
the story in their November issue, available on news stands in
mid-October. The Montserrat package was selected for inclusion
from hundreds of trips submitted worldwide.
During the six
day/five night package, visitors will engage in a series of activities
designed to explore both the devastation and beauty of the small
Caribbean island. The package includes: a boat tour along the Leeward
Coast of the island culminating in spectacular views of the Soufriere
Hills volcano and the devastated capital city of Plymouth; two kayak
tours with snorkeling at secluded black sand beaches and Montserrat's
only white sand beach; a private taxi tour including stops at the world
renowned Montserrat Volcano Observatory and AIR Studios where music
greats such as the Rolling Stones, Elton John and Paul McCartney once
recorded; a trek with a local guide through one of Montserrat's
numerous hiking trails to view the lush forest and search for the
Montserrat Oriole, the island's national bird; a trip to the
uninhabited island of Redonda for a day of diving or snorkeling in the
pristine waters; and dinner at Olveston House, the private home -turned
guest house- of Beatle's producer Sir George Martin. In addition
to accommodations and adventure tours, the package also includes
airport transfers and car rental for five days.
"Voyage
to the Volcano" was created by the Green Monkey Dive Shop, a full
service PADI Resort scuba diving and water sport facility located on
the beach in the town of Little Bay. Co-owner of the Green
Monkey, Melody Schroer, said she was delighted to hear about the
selection. "The Montserrat Tourist Board notified us of the
magazine's competition and shortly thereafter Susan (Tradewinds Real
Estate) suggested that we combine forces to submit a package for
consideration. I took on the activity portion and tried to
include all the things that make Montserrat so distinct from the
typical tourist destination. Obviously our volcano, though
devastating to so many people on the island, is an attraction which
sets us apart from other islands. That, combined with our
pristine diving, uncrowded beaches, and incredibly friendly people,
makes Montserrat an exceptionally unique destination. We are very
excited to have this opportunity to share our beautiful island with the
rest of the world."
Accommodations for the trip are arranged
through Tradewinds Real Estate and include five nights at one of
Montserrat's private vacation villas perched atop the hills overlooking
the volcano and Caribbean Sea. Each villa has a full kitchen,
cable TV, high-speed internet, fresh water swimming pool, and lovely
sunset views. Villas are located close to restaurants and grocery
stores and many are within walking distance of the beach. Susan
Edgecombe, owner of Tradewinds stated, "After a challenging day of
adventures, guests will enjoy the luxury of their own villa, their home
away from home. Picture a late afternoon dip in the pool, then relaxing
on the pool deck with a tropical cocktail. Watch the sun setting on the
horizon as a few people stroll on the beach at Old Road Bay. In the
distance, the volcano can be viewed in all its glory, the steam rising
from the volcanic fumaroles joining the clouds above. What a magical
way to end a day! We are very pleased to be able to offer these
beautiful privately owned villas to complement the "Voyage to the
Volcano Adventure" package."
The package is available throughout
2010 and the price ranges from US$885 to $955 per person (based on
double occupancy). Group rates begin at $785 per person. For
